What is a Departmental Order?

The US Department of Justice Order 556-73, also known as Departmental Order (DO 556-73), allows any individual who does not require an apostille* and is a US citizen or lawful permanent resident (LPR) Alien (“green card” holder) to obtain a copy of their FBI record for personal review, or to correct/update the record if found to be incorrect.

The DO 556-73 request cannot be used for any other purposes, such as for employment or licensing. This service is only available to US citizens or lawful permanent resident aliens currently residing in the U.S. and its territories with a valid U.S. residential address.

*Apostille is a certification that a document has been “legalized” or “authenticated” by the issuing agency through a process in which various seals are placed on the document.
